( oxaprozin )
600 mg caplet
To reduce inflammation and reduce pain.
For anti-inflammatory action and
pain relief in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
The usual daily dose in
rheumatoid arthritis or severe osteoarthritis is 12 mg per day ( two 600 mg
caplets ) taken once daily. For patients of lower body weight or with milder
disease, an initial dosage of one 600 mg caplet per day may be appropriate.
Daypro can cause serious side
effects, including stomach ulcers and intestinal bleeding. most common side
effects are dyspepsia and abdominal pain. As with other NSAIDs, serious side
effects, such as gastrointestinal bleeding, may result in hospitalization or
even fatal outcomes.
Daypro is the newest of the
nonsteroidal drugs. Its overall toxicity is about average. it should not be
taken by pregnant or nursing women. its principal advantage is that it needs
to be taken only once a day since it has a long half-life. The only other
NSAID which needs to be taken only once a day is Feldene ( piroxicam ). This
is a convenience feature but it does suggest caution in dosage, particularly
if the patient is older or has other disease problems, since the drug might
accumulate in the body. The maximum daily dose is 1,800 mg, but this
probably should be very seldom used. Information on long-term side effects
will not be available for some time.
