Feldene

( piroxicam )

10 mg dark red and blue capsule

20 mg dark red capsule

Purpose

To reduce inflammation; to reduce pain slightly.

Indications

For anti-inflammatory activity and mild pain in rheumatoid arthritis, local conditions, and sometimes cartilage degeneration ( osteoarthritis ).

Dosage

One 20 mg tablet once daily. Do not exceed this dosage. This is a long-acting drug, and it need be taken only once daily.

Side effects

The drug has been generally well tolerated, although gastrointestinal symptoms including irritation of the stomach lining do still occur, as well as nausea, indigestion, and heartburn. Allergic reactions, including skin rashes and asthma, are very rare. Peptic ulceration can occur, and hospitalization for gastrointestinal bleeding is seen in 1% to 2% of those who take full doses for one year. Since Feldene is so long-lasting, concern has been expressed that it might be unusually toxic for elderly people or for people with liver or kidney problems.

Special hints

Some seven to twelve days are required before the benefits of Feldene are apparent, and full benefits may not be clear for six weeks or more. Aspirin should be avoided in general. Dosage recommendations and indications for use in children have not been established. Some patients with rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis prefer Feldene, particularly because of the convenience of once-a-day dosage.
