Acetaminophen

( Tylenol, other brands )

325 mg white tablet or caplet

500 mg white tablet or caplet

500 mg yellow / red gel capsule

Purpose

For temporary relief of minor pain.

Indications

Mild temporary pain, particularly with cartilage degeneration ( osteoarthritis ).

Dosage

Two tablets ( 10 grains, 650 mg ) every four hours as needed.

Side effects

Minimal. Unlike aspirin, acetaminophen usually does not upset the stomach, does not cause ringing in the ears, does not affect the clotting of the blood, does not interact with other medications, and is about as safe as can be. Of course, as with any drug, there are occasional problems, but this drug is frequently recommended in place of aspirin for children because of its greater safety. Acetaminophen is the only drug in this category that is not addictive. Overdose can result in severe liver damage.

Special hints

Acetaminophen is not anti-inflammatory; thus it is not an aspirin substitute in the treatment of arthritis. if the condition is a non-inflammatory one such as osteoarthrosis, then it may be approximately as useful as aspirin, with fewer side effects. It is only a mild pain reliever and therefore has fewer disadvantages than the following agents. It is relatively inexpensive. advertised names, such as Tylenol, may be more expensive than other acetaminophens.
