Codeine

( Empirin #3, 4; Tylenol #1, 2, 3, 4; aspirin with codeine #2, 3, 4; Vicodin )

Codeine ( Empirin ) :

30 mg, 60 mg codeine white, round tablet

Tylenol :

8 mg, 15 mg, 30 mg, 60 mg codeine white, round tablet

Vicodin :

5 mg, 500 mg white, capsule-shaped tablet

Purpose

Moderate pain relief.

Indications

For moderate pain relief over the short term.

Dosage

For some curious reason, the strength of codeine is often coded by number. For example, Empirin with codeine #1 or just Empirin #1 contains one-eighth grain or 8 mg of codeine per tablet, #2 contains one-fourth grain or 15 mg, #3 contains one-half grain or 30 mg, and #4 contains one grain or 65 mg of codeine phosphate.A common dosage is a #3 tablet ( 32 mg codeine ) every four hours as needed for pain.

Side effects

The side effects are proportional to the dosage. The more you take, the more side effects you are likely to have. Allergic reactions are quite rare.

Codeine is a narcotic. Thus, it can lead to addiction, with tolerance and drug dependence. Frequently in persons with arthritis it leads to constipation and sometimes a set of complications including fecal impaction. More worrisome is the way that persons using codeine seem to lose their will to cope. The person taking codeine for many years sometimes seems sluggish and generally depressed. We don't really know if the codeine is responsible, but we do think that codeine often makes it more difficult for the person with arthritis to cope with the very real problems that abound. the older patient can develop substantial complications from constipation caused by the codeine.
