Percodan

( Percobarb, Percodan-Demi, Percogesic, oxycodone )

Percodan : yellow tablet

Percodan-Demi : pink tablet

Purpose

For pain relief.

Indications

For short-term relief of moderate to severe pain.

Dosage

One tablet every six hours as needed.

Side effects

Percodan is a curious combination drug. The basic narcotic is oxycodone, to which is added aspirin and other minor pain relievers. Combination drugs have a number of theoretical disadvantages, but Percodan is a strong and effective reliever of pain. It does require a special prescription because it is a strong narcotic and the hazards of serious addiction are present. The manufacturers state that the habit-forming potentialities are somewhat less than morphine and somewhat greater than codeine. the drug is usually well tolerated.

Special hints

Percodan is a good drug for people with cancer, but it is very dangerous in the treatment of arthritis. It is not an anti-inflammatory agent and does nto work directly on any of the disease processes. It is habit forming and it does break the pain reflex. It is a mental depressant, and serious addiction can result.
