Cascara to Help Relieve Constipation

Question : I AM a 35-year-old lady. I have suffered from constipation for the past few years. I also often break out in acne on my back. Is it due to a toxin accumulation in my body? How can I relieve myself from these problems? Your advice is appreciated.

Answer : TOXIN can be related to constipation and acne. Constipation is usually characterized by irregular bowel movement and difficulty in passing stools. Whatever stool is passed may be hard, knotted and dark. Repeated straining can cause hemorrhoids (the veins of the anus become sluggish, swollen or inflamed). Chronic constipation is unhealthy because toxins can be reabsorbed by our intestines when waste remains in the intestines for excessive periods. A healthy colon eliminates waste in 6-18 hours. The underlying causes of constipation include a low-fiber and high-sugar diet, stress, imbalance of intestinal flora, lack of liquid consumption and physical activity.

Cascara contains laxative constituents that could gently stimulate the large intestinal wall to increase bowel movement. Marshmallow root possesses demulcent and emollient properties, thus soothing the stomach and intestinal system. Other herbs like Slippery Elm, Fennel and Ginger could effectively reduce inflammation while addressing the complaints associated with constipation. Supplementing with friendly bacteria supplement, especially the family groups of Lactobacilli, Bifidobacteria and Streptococcus is beneficial in reducing the harmful bacteria in our digestive tract.

As for dietary modifications, increase the intake of high fibre foods, such as raw fruits and vegetables, whole grains and bran, reduce the intake of processed, fried and sweet foods and drink at least eight 250ml glasses of water or juice a day. Modifications on lifestyle are also needed. Exercise regularly, at least three times a week, go to toilet as soon as the urge strikes (whenever possible), manage stress properly and do not use laxatives on long- term basis as this causes dependency.

As the skin is another means of detoxification, wastes that remain in the blood are eliminated through the skin causing the development of acne. Acne can also triggered by overproduction of sebum, hormonal disturbances, poor diet and sluggish liver. Echinacea has a powerful blood cleansing ability to assist the body to get rid of toxins. Red Clover is often used in combination with herbs such as Yellow Dock and Dandelion root in treating skin problems. Calendula possesses anti-inflammatory effects and is beneficial for all types of inflammatory skin lesions.

Tea Tree Oil with the herbs Myrrh, Echinacea, Chamomile provide synergistic action and effectively reduce redness and inflammation, at the same time promoting rejuvenation and total healing of the skin. This cream-colored gel once absorbed will not leave any unsightly stain on the skin and can be used at any time of the day.
