Prevention & treatment of the acute hypotensive state occurring with spinal anesthesia & as adjunctive treatment of hypotension.
IM or SC injection
Prevention of hypotension 2-10 mg.
Adjunctive treatment of hypotension 15-100 mg in 500 mL of sodium CI injection or 5% dextrose injection. Max: 500/500 mL of infusion fluid.
Direct IV injection
In severe shock 0.5-5 mg, followed by an infusion of 15-100 mg in 500 mL of diluent. Titrate to
blood pressure response. Prolonged action of this drug may prevent adequate expansion of circulating volume & cause perpetuation of shock.
Usage with cyclopropane or halothane anesthesia
Avoid excessive blood pressure response. Patients with cirrhosis, heart or thyroid disease, hypertension, diabetes or history of malaria. Digitalized patients. With the prolonged action of this drug, a cumulative effect is possible which may produce a prolonged elevation of
blood pressure. Prolonged action of this drug may prevent adequate expansion of circulating volume & cause perpetuation of shock. Effects during pregnancy, in nursing mothers or in children have not been established.
May cause acute pulmonary edema, cardiac arrhythmias & arrest due to rapidly induced hypertensive responses. May cause sinus or ventricular tachycardia or other arrhythmias, especially in patients with
MAO inhibitors may potentiate the action of sympathomimetics.
Vial 10 mg/mL x 10 mL.
