ARAMINE
Contents:
Metaraminol bitartrate.
Indications:
Prevention & treatment of the acute hypotensive state occurring with spinal anesthesia & as adjunctive treatment of hypotension.
Dosage:
IM or SC injection
Prevention of hypotension 2-10 mg.
IV infusion
Adjunctive treatment of hypotension 15-100 mg in 500 mL of sodium CI injection or 5% dextrose injection. Max: 500/500 mL of infusion fluid.
Direct IV injection
In severe shock 0.5-5 mg, followed by an infusion of 15-100 mg in 500 mL of diluent. Titrate to
blood pressure response. Prolonged action of this drug may prevent adequate expansion of circulating volume & cause perpetuation of shock.
Contraindication:
Usage with cyclopropane or halothane anesthesia
Special Precautions:
Avoid excessive blood pressure response. Patients with cirrhosis, heart or thyroid disease, hypertension, diabetes or history of malaria. Digitalized patients. With the prolonged action of this drug, a cumulative effect is possible which may produce a prolonged elevation of
blood pressure. Prolonged action of this drug may prevent adequate expansion of circulating volume & cause perpetuation of shock. Effects during pregnancy, in nursing mothers or in children have not been established.
Adverse Reactions:
May cause acute pulmonary edema, cardiac arrhythmias & arrest due to rapidly induced hypertensive responses. May cause sinus or ventricular tachycardia or other arrhythmias, especially in patients with
myocardial infarction.
Drug Interactions:
MAO inhibitors may potentiate the action of sympathomimetics.
