Composition
1 gastric-juice-resistant tablet
contains:
150-220 mg dried powdered extract
from Tinnevelly senna fruits standardized to hydroxyanthracene derivatives
calculated as sennoiside B.
Other Ingredients
Polyethylene glycol 6000, Liquid
glucose, Microcrystalline cellulose, Polysorbate 80, Acacia gum, Magnesium
stearate, Calcium carbonate, Talc, Sucrose, Lactose anhydrous, Titanium
dioxide, Stearic acid, Hydrophobic colloidal silica, Methacrylic copolymer,
Sodium carboxymethylcellulose, Montanglycolwax.
Mode of Action
Senna is a laxative by virtue of
its main component, the anthracene derivatives Sennosides.
Indications
For short term use in cases of
constipation of varying causes, conditions in need of easy bowel movements
and for clearing or emptying the intestinal tract for diagnostic and
therapeutic measures.
Contraindications
Ileus, inflammatory conditions of
the intestine (e.g Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis) as well as abdominal
pains of unknown cause and electrolyte imbalance. Also contraindicated in
patients with a hypersensitivity to preparation of Senna. Do not give to
children under 12 years of age. Do not use during pregnancy and the
lactation period.
Interactions with other
Preparations
In the case of chronic abuse, a
strengthening of the cardiac glycoside effect is possible as a result of
hypokalaemia.
Simultaneous use with
chloramphenicol can significantly reduce the laxative effect of Senna.
Dosage and Mode of Application
If not prescribed otherwise, 1-2
tablets to be swallowed with some liquid at bedtime. Stimulating laxatives
should not be taken over a long period without consulting a physician.
Side Effects
Are dose dependent but rare.
a) abdominal pains
b) abdominal colic
c) tenesmus
d) nausea
e) belching
f) diarrhoea
g) may discolour urine or stools
Chronic intake of high doses can
lead to hypokalaemia, albuminurica and haematuria.
Precautions
If condition persists for more
than one week, please consult a physician.
Long term use is not advisable.
In chronic cases of constipation, treatment with high fiber diet should be
encouraged.
Frequent or prolonged use of this
preparation may result in dependence towards the products and imbalanced
electrolytes.
Do not use when abdominal pain,
nausea or vomiting are present.
The shelf life of the product is
3 years from the date of manufacture. Do not use after the expiry date.
Store below 25°C.
