Dhalumag
COMPOSITION
Each 5ml contains:
Magnesium Trisilicate BP .............................500mg
Dried Aluminium Hydroxide Gel BP .............250mg
PHARMACOLOGY
(1) Aluminium hydroxide neutralises gastric acid by reacting with intestinal
secretion to form insoluble salts. By increasing the gastric pH, it also
inactivates pepsin.
(2) Magnesium trisilicate reacts slowly with HCI to form magnesium chloride
which is available for reabsorption in the intestine when the pH is on the
alkaline side.
INDICATIONS
For the symptomatic relief of hyperacidity and peptic ulcer conditions.
DOSAGE
5-15 ml repeated in accordance with the patient's need.
PRECAUTIONS
This preparation will alter the absorption of other drugs, eg. Tetracycline,
vitamins, anticholinergic agents, barbiturates, digoxin, quinine, quinindine.
At a high dosage, magnesium may cause CNS depression if elevated serum
magnesium occurs. Prolonged administration of aluminium hydroxide in
phosphorous deficient diets may cause osteomalacia.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
This preparation should only be given with caution in renal insufficiency
patients.
SIDE EFFECTS
Aluminium hydroxide may cause constipation. However, this problem can be
prevented by the presence of magnesium trisilicate.
TOXICITY
Dhalumag is well tolerated.
STORAGE
Store below 30°C, shake well before use.
