Epilepsy. Trigeminal neuralgia.
Mania & manic-depressive prophyloxis. Alcohol withdrawal syndrome. Diabetes
insipidus centralis. Painful diabetic neuropathy.
Adult 100-200 mg may
increase to 200-1600 mg/day
Children 10-20 mg/kg body
Atrio-ventricular (AV) block. History of bone marrow
depression or acute intermittent porphyria. Concomitant use of MAOIs.
History of cardiovascular (CV), liver & kidney
disease or adverse haematological reaction to other drugs. Elderly;
pregnancy, lactation. Perform complete blood counts, liver function tests &
urinalysis. Monitor intraocular pressure.
Occasionally, taste disturbance,
dizziness, ataxia, diplopia ( transient at start of treatment). Rarely,
hyponatremia, allergic skin reactions (mild), agitation (elderly). Isolated
cases; Exfoliative dermatitis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome (rare), blood
disorders, hepatitis, aplastic anemia, renal dysfunction (rare) &
Blood levels raised by macrolide
antibipoxyphene, viloxazine & possibly cimetidime.
