Contents:

Carbamazepine

 

Indications:

Epilepsy. Trigeminal neuralgia. Mania & manic-depressive prophyloxis. Alcohol withdrawal syndrome. Diabetes insipidus centralis. Painful diabetic neuropathy.

 

Dosage:

Adult 100-200 mg may increase to 200-1600 mg/day

Children 10-20 mg/kg body weight/day.

 

Contraindications:

Atrio-ventricular (AV) block. History of bone marrow depression or acute intermittent porphyria. Concomitant use of MAOIs.

 

Special precautions:

History of cardiovascular (CV), liver & kidney disease or adverse haematological reaction to other drugs. Elderly; pregnancy, lactation. Perform complete blood counts, liver function tests & urinalysis. Monitor intraocular pressure.

 

Adverse Reactions:

Occasionally, taste disturbance, dizziness, ataxia, diplopia ( transient at start of treatment). Rarely, hyponatremia, allergic skin reactions (mild), agitation (elderly). Isolated cases; Exfoliative dermatitis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome (rare), blood disorders, hepatitis, aplastic anemia, renal dysfunction (rare) & thromboembolism.

 

Drug indications:

Blood levels raised by macrolide antibipoxyphene, viloxazine & possibly cimetidime.

 

Presentation/Packing:

Chewable tab 100 mg x 100's

Tab 100 mg x 50's, 500's.

CR tab 200 mg x 200's. 400 mg x 200's.

Syrup 100 mg/5 mL x 250 mL
