Recurring ear infections

Question : My youngest daughter is suffering from a recurring ear infection. How can I prevent it ? I do not wish to give her any more antibiotics.

Answer : IT has been found that about 75 per cent of all children suffer from some type of ear infection. It may be caused by an upper respiratory infection or an allergic reaction to some foods, most commonly dairy products. Recurring ear infections are generally an indication that an original infection has been resistant to the prescribed treatment.

Children who have frequent ear infections are advised to test for food allergies. Identifying and avoiding the common allergenic foods such as wheat, dairy products, corn, oranges, peanut butter and all simple carbohydrates may be beneficial.

Incorporating clinically proven strains of bacteria such as Lactobacillus NCFM, Lactobacillus LA5 and Bifidobacterium BB12 in her diet is also helpful. These friendly bacteria have immune system modulating properties that can help her body to fight against infection.

Vitamin C with bioflavonoids, vitamin B complex, zinc and vitamin E (use alpha-tocopherol form) as well as echinacea supplementation are important in boosting her immunity against infections.

Providing a natural antibiotic -- allicin, which is produced by an enzymatic reaction of garlic amino acid allicin and garlic enzyme allinase, may assist her immune system in a number of important ways, including stimulating cells, killing pathogens and detoxifying carcinogens.

Ear problems are more common in the homes of smokers. Thus reducing her exposure to cigarette smoke may help to prevent recurring ear infections.
