Treating ear infections in children

Question : MY three-year-old son has been suffering from ear infections since he was 10 months old. Apart from medication, what else can I do to help him?

Answer : EAR infection is usually caused by bacteria or virus and is most common in young children and infants.

One who suffers from ear infection very often experiences ear ache, itching and discomfort in the ear. There may also be fluids in the ear.

Encourage your son to eat more foods rich in vitamin A, C and E as well as zinc which can be found in fruits and vegetables.

Reduce intake of sugar-rich foods and refined carbohydrates as these can cause an infection.

A combination of prebiotic and probiotics (friendly bacteria), Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5 and Bifidobacterium lactis BB-12 help modulate immunity and may reduce risk of infection in young children.

Prebiotic is a non-digestible food ingredient that stimulates the growth of friendly bacteria.

A good example of prebiotic is inulin, which you can get in combination with probiotics at pharmacies.

For ear infection caused by bacteria or virus, one can take allicin, the major biologically active component of garlic as it has anti-microbial activities.

You must also adhere to the following:

Dry ears thoroughly after swimming.

Avoid swimming in polluted water.

Avoid drinking while lying down.

Do not give your child a bottle when lying down.

Avoid over-using antibiotics.

Since your child often experiences recurrent ear infection. it is advisable to follow up with a specialist.
