Alcoholic drinks

There are a great variety of alcoholic drinks used, including Chinese white liquor, wine, rice or millet wine, etc.

Nature and flavor : Sweet, pungent, warm or hot.

Constituents : Its main contents ate ethyl alcohol and water. Different kinds of alcoholic drinks contain various concentrations of ethyl alcohol, ranging from 10-70 percent, and other ingredients, including organic acids such as formic acid, ethyl actate, glycerol, tartaric acid, malic acid, glucose and many others.

Actions : Alcoholic drinks yield actions on central nervous system, blood circulatory system, digestive system and others. It first excites and then inhibits the nervous system; dilates blood vessels in the skin, promotes circulation and may result in circulatory collapse when administered in large quantity; stimulates secretion of the stomach and gastric acid. Hence, it is indicated in rheumatism, cold evils in the abdomen, wounds. It should be administered in suitable quantity.

Clinical reports : A report mentioned that 14 cases of simple postpartum diarrhoea were treated by boiling 250ml millet wine to which 125g brown sugar was added. Continue to boil for 2-3 minutes. Consume it in a draught after cooling down. Ten cases were cured; some within 3 days. Aside from mild vertigo, no side effects were observed.

Recipe examples :

(1) Coughing due to cold sputum. Soak pig fat, sesamic oil, bee honey and powdered tea, each 125g, in liquor. Boil and let cool down.

(2) For itching rash in woman. Mix some bee honey with millet wine and drink it.

(3) For postpartum simple diarrhoea. Boil 250g millet wine and add some brown sugar. Boil for another 2-3 minutes. Drink in a draught or in 2 doses.

(4) For rheumatism or pain over the whole body. Fry 500g black soya beans until it cracks. Soak in 100ml millet wine in an earthenware pot. Let it cool down and drink.

Remarks : Long term consumption of liquor is harmful to your body's health, especially in excessive amounts. Liquor is called "poisonous" in traditional Chinese medicine.
