Baryte
HEAVY SPAR
This mineral is the main source of barium sulphate, which is given as a
"barium meal" before some X-ray investigations. Its colours range from clear
to brown.
The main ore for barium, Baryte takes its name from the Greek barys, meaning heavy.
Baryte occurs across the world and is transparent or translucent, comes in many
shapes of crystal, and has a glassy or pearly appearance. It can be many colours, ranging
from clear to yellow, blue or brown, depending on the minerals it contains.
