Carambola
Averrhoa carambola Linn.
FIVE CORNERS, YANG TAO
The carambola, or five corners,
yang tao (poplar peach), is also called san lean (three collect) and yang
tao (goat peach). It is a small tree or shrub. The fruit is oval, 50-80mm
long and has 5 angular ridges running the length of the fruit (when sliced
each segment is star shaped).
The surface is bare, smooth and green or yellow-green. The flesh contains a
lot of juice, the flavor acid-sweet. There are a number of seeds in the
centre. The fruit ripens in the summer. Its nature is neither hot nor cold,
and it contains no poison.
The fruit can activate saliva, ease coughing, suppress adverse energy and
mitigate stomach disorders. It contains sucrose, vitamin B1, oxalic acid,
citric acid, malic acid, etc.
APPLICATIONS
1. THROAT INFLAMMATION; SORES IN THE MOUTH; TOOTHACHE CAUSED BY HEAT AND
WIND. Take 1-3 pieces of fresh fruit, crush, squeeze and obtain the juice.
Hold in the mouth and slowly swallow it. Do this daily 1-2 times.
2. COUGH DUE TO 'WIND-HEAT EVIL'; HICCUP. Take 1 piece of fresh fruit, hold
in the mouth, slowly chew it and swallow. Do this 3-4 times daily, or
whenever coughing occurs.
3. URINE, REDDISH IN COLOR,
ASTRINGENT AND PAINFUL WHEN URINATING; OLIGURIA. Take 2-3 pieces of fresh
fruit, crush, add 1 cup of boiled water, mix and serve. Do this daily 2-3
times.
4. STRENGURIA; URINARY STONE.
Take 3-5 pieces of fresh fruit and 30 grams of candied honey. steam in a
sealed container, mash and serve. Do this daily, both in the morning and in
the evening.
5. HAEMORRHOIDS, BLEEDING. Take 2
pieces of fresh fruit and eat. Do this daily both in the morning an din the
evening.
6. WIND RASH; NETTLE RASH; RED
SWELLINGS; PRURITUS. Take 500 grams of tart unripe fresh fruit, crush, ad
water and simmer. Use the liquid to wash the skin 3 times a day. At the same
time eat 15 grams of salted fruit.
7. SUNSTROKE; 'WETNESS-EVIL';
WEEPING WOUNDS; VOMITING AND DIARRHOEA WHEN UNACCUSTOMED TO A NEW
ENVIRONMENT. Take 60 grams of fruit preserved in sugar and slowly chew and
eat.
8. INDIGESTION; TIGHT FEELING IN
THE CHEST WITH NAUSEA. Take half a piece of pickled carambola and slowly
chew it. Wait for 3 hours before repeating the dose.
9. HANGOVER. Take 1 piece of
pickled carambola, steam in water and serve.
PREPARATION
PICKLED, SALTED AND CANDIED
CARAMBOLA. Slice unripe fruit and place in the sun until it is half dry.
Cover it with vinegar ( for pickled fruit), salt (for salted fruit), or
sugar (for candied fruit) and leave for some time, then use as needed.
