Concha ostrea
OYSTER SHELL
Ground oyster shell is used by
Chinese and Unani physicians as a calcium supplement, and for disorders such
as insomnia and indigestion. Homeopaths use it for conditions ranging from
dizziness to eye infections.
Found throughout the world, the oyster shell is a greyish colour
on the outside and pearly white on the inside. Like other shells of bivalve
shellfish - and several are used in similar ways - the oyster shell consists
mainly of calcium salts.

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS
Calcium carbonate; calcium
phosphate; iodine.
ACTIONS
Astringent; sedative; neutralizes excess stomach acid.
MEDICINAL USE
Given in Chinese and Unani
medicine as a calcium supplement, for instance to strengthen the gums and teeth, and also for indigestion, high blood pressure,
restlessness, insomnia, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), night sweats and womb disorders, and after fevers. The homeopathic medicine,
Calcarea carbonica, is prescribed for a range of conditions from headaches and dizziness to nightsweats and acute eye infections.
