Fluorite
CALCIUM FLUORIDE, FLUORSPAR
The main source of fluorine, an
essential mineral variably supplied by food and water, calcium fluoride is
given to increase resistance to tooth decay. Fluorite is used in its natural
form in Chinese and homeopathic medicine.
Occurring naturally as beautiful crystals in a rainbow of colors,
fluorite is the main source of fluorine, an element that is highly poisonous yet an essential trace mineral.
We obtain much of this essential fluorine as sodium fluoride from water. However, the amount of this salt in water varies widely from area to area.
In low sodium fluoride areas, tooth decay is high and in very high areas, irreversible tooth mottling is routine.
Hence the controversy about how much we should depend on the addition of sodium fluoride to our water supply to prevent tooth decay.
Fluoridated toothpastes and tooth paints provide a way of benefiting from fluoride without the risks associated with swallowing it.
