Levisticum officinale (Umbelliferae)
LOVAGE
Lovage root has a long medicinal
history and is still given herbally for colicky indigestion, flatulence,
bronchial infections, and menstrual problems.
A popular herb throughout history in both culinary and medicinal arts,
lovage is still used as a flavouring in food products and alcoholic beverages. Native to the
Mediterranean coast of Europe, it is a perennial with a strong fleshy root, divided leaves of maple-leaf-like leaflets,
and umbrella-like clusters of white flowers in midsummer, followed by flat brown seeds.

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS
Volatile oil containing phthalides; coumarins,
including bergapten, coumarin, psoralen, and umbelliferone; betasitosterol.
ACTIONS
Aids digestion; reduces muscle tension and spasm; expectorant; anti-microbial.
MEDICINAL USE
Given for flatulent and colicky indigestion,
bronchial infections, painful or insufficient menstruation, and as a mouthwash in minor infections.
A close relative, Angelica sinensis, is used in Chinese medicine for menstrual problems and rheumatic pain.
