Loquat
Eriobotrya Japonica (Thunb) Lindl.

The loquat, pi pa, is also called
lu jie (reed orange) and pi pa guo (loquat fruit). It is an evergreen tree
growing to a height of 8 meters with a large rough leaf. The fruit is round
or oval, with a diameter of about 25 mm. It ripens at the end of summer. The
ripe fruit is yellow or yellow-orange and covered with fine hair.
The skin is comparatively thin, the flesh yellow-orange and containing a lot
of juice. The flavor is sweet or acid-sweet. There is a seed in the centre.
The nature of the fruit is neither hot nor cold. It can cool fevers and
increase saliva.
The stone has a bitter flavor, its nature neither hot nor cold. It helps
clear the throat and stop coughing.
The fruit contains reducing sugar, pentosans, protein, fat, vitamin B1, C,
carotene, fruit gum, organic acids, tannin, sodium, potassium, iron,
calcium, phosphorous, etc. The stone contains fatty-oil, amygdalin, etc.
APPLICATIONS
1. ACUTE CHRONIC THROAT INFLAMMATION. Take 90 grams of fresh fruit (discard
the skin and the stone) and 15 grams of sugar. Steam in water for half an
hour, then eat the fruit and drink the liquid. Do this in the morning and
again in the evening.
2. EXCESSIVE THIRST, POLYDIPSIA; DRY THROAT; URINE, BRIEF AND RED. Take 250
grams of over ripe fruit, discard the skin and stone and eat. Do this in the
morning and again in the evening.
3. COUGH. Take 9-15 grams of fruit stones and crush. Add 3 slices of fresh
ginger, cover with water and simmer for some time. Serve in the morning and
again in the evening.
4. CONSTIPATION IN THE AGED; CONTINUOUS ASTHMA COUGH. Take 9-15 grams of
fruit stones, crush, and simmer in water. Strain, and obtain the liquid, add
30 grams of candied honey, mix in and serve.

If suffering from a weak spleen or diarrhoea do not eat this fruit.
