AUTUMN ELAEAGNUS
NIU NAI GUO
The milk fruit, niu nai guo (cow's milk fruit), is also called liu zhi wei
hua teng guo (warty branched small flowered vine fruit) or niu nai zi (cow's
udder). A deciduous vine-like shrub. The vine is greyish-white and covered
with tiny black wart like bumps.
The fruit is elliptical, about 20mm long, deep red in color and covered with
fine hair, with a calyx at the base. The fruit ripens in the summer when the
flesh becomes translucent with abundant juice and a sweet flavor. The seeds
are slightly flat, rather like a broad bean.
The fruit is sweet, its nature neutral. It nourishes the Yin, enriches the
blood and invigorates the spleen. It contains carbohydrates and a number of
vitamins, etc.
APPLICATIONS
1. WEAKNESS AFTER ILLNESS; EASILY EXHAUSTED; LOSS OF APPETITE. Take 100
grams of fresh fruit, discard peel and stone and eat. Do this once a day.
2. ANEMIA WITH PALE LIPS, SENSATION OF COLDNESS IN THE LIMBS AND DIZZINESS.
Take 30 grams of dried fruit, 15 grams of red Chinese dates
and 30 grams of sugar. Steam in water and serve once a day.
3. LACK OF MILK AFTER CHILD BIRTH. Take 60 grams of the dried fruit, 60
grams of lean pork and 5 red Chinese dates. Steam in water and
serve once a day.
4. PARASITIC DISEASES IN CHILDREN LEADING TO EMACIATION. First treat the
child to remove the parasites. When this has been done take 15 grams of
dried fruit, add 30 grams of brown sugar and steam in water. Take this once
a day for ten consecutive days.
