Mirabilitum
GLAUBER'S SALT, MIRABILITE, SODIUM SULPHATE DECAHYDRATE
Called the "wonder salt" by Dr
Glauber, who developed its use as a purgative, it si still used for
constipation in Chinese and orthodox medicien but only for robust patients.
Mirabilite occurs naturally as colourless or
white crystals in deposits from hot springs or salt lakes. It was given the name Glauber's salt in 1668 after Dr Johann
Glauber, a German chemist who described the medicinal properties of the residual sodium sulphate
he produced when making hydrochloric acid. He modestly christened it sal mirabile, the wondrous salt.

Purges the bowels.
MEDICINAL USE
In Chinese and orthodox medicine it
is prescribed for constipation associated with fever, but only for robust patients and with large amounts of fluid to protect the delicate surface of the intestines. Applied externally by Chinese physicians for red, swollen eyes and ulceration of the mouth, throat or skin. Given by homeopaths as Natrum sulphuricum for water accumulation and swellings.
