Monkey Pear
Actinidia arguta, BOWER ACTINIDIA,
MI HOU LI
The monkey pear, mi hou li (monkey pear) is also called ruan zao zi (soft
date), teng gua (cane melon), teng li (cane pear), and mao hou Ii (hair
monkey pear). It is a large vine growing to 30 metres long or more with egg
shaped leaves. The fruit is oval, smooth and shiny and there is a small
point on the end. The skin is yellow-green, and thin.
The flesh is soft and full of juice, the flavor sweet or slightly
acid-sweet. Inside there are some small medium-brown seeds. The fruit ripens
in the autumn. Its nature is cool.
The virtue of the fruit is that it can cool fever, stop thirst and promote
diuresis. The fruit contains cane sugar, mucilage, starch, protein, tannin,
organic acid, vitamins A, C, P, etc.
APPLICATIONS
1. FEVER WITH THIRST; DRY RETCHING. Take 60 grams of fresh fruit, crush and
squeeze to obtain the juice. Drink the juice twice a day.
2. ABDOMINAL SWELLING CAUSED BY MALNUTRITION. Take 30 grams of fresh fruit,
discard the skin, mash and add 1 egg plus an appropriate amount of sugar.
Add water and steam. Eat some of the pulp 1-2 times a day.
3. VITAMIN C . DEFICIENCY. Take
30 grams of fresh fruit, discard the skin and eat. Do this daily for 5 days.
4. HEPATITUS; TUBERCULOSIS, DURING RECOVERY. Take 30 grams of fresh fruit
and serve daily, both in the morning and the evening. Do this for one month.
5. URINE, RED AND PAINFUL WHEN URINATING; BLADDER STONES; URINARY TRACT
CALCULUS. Take 30 grams of dried fruit, add water and steam till cooked.
Take this amount 3 times a day.
6. DUODENAL ULCER; STOMACH ULCER. Take 60 grams of dried fruit, cover with
water and simmer for some time. Drink the liquid in place of tea for a
period of 2 months.
