Mulberry
Morus rubra and morus alba, SANG
GUO
The mulberry fruit, sang guo, is also known as sang sheng and sang shi. The
tree is deciduous and grows 3-7 meters. The fruit as we know it is
elongated, 20-25 mm long, and is actually made up of a large number of very
small round fruits. As it ripens it changes from green to purple-red and
then to black.
The fruit contains a lot of juice and its flavor is sweet or sour sweet.
When it is green its flavor is sour. Its nature is cool.
The fruit aids in treating yin deficiency and nourishes the kidneys. It
contains carbohydrate, vitamins B1, B2, C, carotene, calcium, tannin,
mulberry fruit oil, inorganic salts, malic acid, tannin, centaurea pigment,
etc.
APPLICATIONS
1. NEURASTHENIA; INSOMNIA; AMNESIA. Take 30 grams of mulberry fruit and 15
grams of wild jujube kernels (Ziziphi spinosae). Add water and steam till
cooked. Take the lot every evening.
2. WEAKNESS; DIZZINESS; LACK OF STRENGTH; EMACIATION; LOSS OF ENERGY. Take
one soup spoon of mulberry fruit tonic 2 or 3 times a day for as long as
necessary.
3. SIGHT FAILING; HAIR AND BEARD GREYING PREMATURELY; SENILITY; SEMINAL
EMISSION. Take 30 grams of mulberry fruit and 30 grams of tuber of
multiflower knotweed (Polygonum multiflorum), cover with water and steam
till cooked. Take a full dose every evening for a month.
4. ANEMIA, POOR CIRCULATION
GIVING RISE TO PALE LIPS, COLD FEET, DEAFNESS, DIZZINESS. Take 60 grams of
fresh fruit or 30 grams of dried mulberry plus 30 grams of Longan pulp. Add
water and steam till cooked and mash, then serve. Do this twice a day.
5. FEVERISH COUGH ASSOCIATED WITH TUBERCULOSIS. Take 60 grams of fresh
fruit, 15 grams of the root bark of the Chinese wolfberry (boxthorn, Lycium
chirense) and 15 grams of sugar. Add water and steam till cooked. Take this
daily in the morning and again in the evening and it should help in the
healing process.
6. SCROFULA; TUBERCULOSIS OF THE LYMPH GLAND. Take 30 grams of fresh fruit,
add water and steam till cooked. Serve this amount every day 3 times.
7. CONSTIPATION. Take 30 grams of dried mulberry and 30 grams of candied
honey, add water and steam till cooked. Take as needed.
8. HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE CAUSING HEADACHE; HEART PALPITATIONS; NUMB HANDS;
LIGHTHEADED FEELING. Take 90 grams of fresh fruit and 250 grams of the leaf
of the Chinese wolfberry (boxthorn, Lycium chinense) including the stalk.
Cover with ample water and simmer till cooked. Drink in place of tea.
PREPARATIONS
DRIED MULBERRY. Simply dry fresh fruit in the sun, or steam it briefly and
then dry it in the sun. This is the mulberry fruit of traditional medicine.
MULBERRY TONIC. Take 250 grams each of dried mulberry, the fruit of the
Chinese wolf berry (boxthorn, Lycium chinense), and red dates without the
stones. Cover with water and simmer till cooked and reduced to a paste like
consistency. Mix in 500 grams of sugar and stir till dissolved. The tonic is
now ready to use.
