Mullein is a visually striking
plant with its tall stem rising straight and breaking out into yellow blooms
at the end. the leaves too are unusual: soft, broad and fuzz, roseate in
form, they remind one of a comfortable woolly blanket. Mulleins are often
seen standing along highways like sentinels.
Mullein is primarily used for
treating inflammations and swellings, especially when lymph nodes in the
throat, neck, arms and groin swell or are congested as in sore throats,
mumps and fluid in the ear. It cleanses the lymphatic system generally. For
this it is applied as a poultice and taken as a tea. Its mucous reducing
properties make it useful for coughs and catarrh. It also has nervine-anodyne
properties which relieve pain and promote sound sleep. Mullein tea will
arrest diarrhoea.
For ear ache, make a herbal oil
with mullein, soak a piece of cotton wool in it and place it in the ear. For
Air types or for excited Air humour, infuse mullein with hot milk and drink
at night before sleeping. |
