WHITE PEAR, BRETSCHNEIDER PEAR,
BAI LI
The pear, bai li (white pear) is
also called xue li (snow pear). It is a deciduous tree growing to a height
of 5-10 meters. The fruit is pear shaped and 50-90 mm long. The outer skin
is thin and pale yellow, showing small dots. The flesh is white, contains a
lot of juice, and breaks under slight pressure. The flavor is sweet, but
not greatly so. It ripens in the summer. Its nature is cool.
The fruit can cool fevers, moisten the lungs, increase saliva and relieve
the effects of alcohol. It contains sucrose, fructose, protein, fat,
vitamins B1 B2 C, nicotinic acid, carotene, calcium, phosphorous, iron,
organic acids, etc.
APPLICATIONS
1. LUNGS, BURNING FEELING, WITH THICK PHLEGM AND COUGH; TUBERCULOSIS,
SPITTING AND VOMITING BLOOD. Take one (Chinese) soup spoon of pear tonic
in the morning and again in the evening every day.
2. FEVER WITH EXCESSIVE THIRST; EMACIATION WITH THIRST. Take 250-500 grams
of fresh fruit, crush, squeeze and obtain the juice. Drink this twice a day.
3. CONSTIPATION. Take 250-500 grams of fresh fruit, peel and eat at one
sitting.
4. HANGOVER. Squeeze fresh fruit juice and drink 1-2 cups.
PREPARATION
PEAR TONIC. Take 500 grams of fresh fruit and discard the skin and heart.
Add 250 grams of lily bulb (Bulbus lilii) and 250 grams of sugar. Mix and
simmer in water till it thickens.
WARNING
If suffering from a weak spleen, diarrhoea or a cold feeling in the lungs
with a cough do not eat this fruit.
