Pomelo

The pomelo, you, is also called wen dan (gentle dawn), you zi (pomelo) and sha tian you (sand farm pomelo). It is an evergreen tree growing to a height of 8 meters. The fruit is pear shaped or round. The top of the fruit is round and the bottom of the fruit has a carpopodium or its vestige. It ripens at the end of summer and the beginning of autumn.

When ripe some varieties have a diameter of 120-200 mm. The outer surface is bare and smooth, yellow-green when immature and yellow when ripe. The surface of the skin is covered with oil pores. The skin of the fruit is quite thick, 10-15mm. The juicy part of the fruit is in 12-18 segments, which can be divided.

The flesh is white or pink. The juice from the fruit is sweet or acid-sweet. Each segment contains a number of seeds. The fruit flesh has an sweet-acid flavor. Its nature is cool and it has no poison. It helps the spleen, stops coughs and relieves the effects of alcohol.

The fruit skin has a pungent, bitter-sweet flavor. Its nature is warm. It can clear phlegm, stop coughs, regulate the flow of vital energy and ease pain. The fruit seeds have a bitter flavor and warm nature. They help ease the pain of hernia.

The fruit contains carotene, vitamins B1, B2, C, nicotinic acid, calcium, phosphorous, iron, carbohydrate, etc. The skin contains volatile oils, and glucosides, etc. The seeds contain oil, corktree ketone, ester of corktree, etc.


APPLICATIONS
1. COUGH WITH EXCESS PHLEGM. Take 90 grams of fresh fruit flesh, 15 grams of rice wine* and 30 grams of candied honey. Steam in a sealed container, then mash and serve. Do this once a day.
(* Japanese sake can be used. Ed.)

2. INDIGESTION; BELCHING; STALE FEELING IN THE MOUTH AND SLOBBERING. Take 60 grams of fruit flesh and eat it. Do this 3 times a day.

3. HANGOVER; FOUL BREATH AFTER DRINKING. Take 60-90 grams of fruit flesh and slowly chew it.

4. CAR SICKNESS; SEA SICKNESS; COMMON COLD CAUSING UPSET STOMACH AND VOMITING. Take 30-40 grams of candied pomelo skin and slowly chew.

5. STOMACH PAINS IN SMALL CHILDREN; INDIGESTION CAUSING DIARRHOEA. Take 15 grams of candied pomelo skin, add water, steam and serve. Do this every day, 3 times a day. Alternatively take 3 grams of fresh pomelo skin, cover with water, steam and serve.

 

6. RHEUMATISM PAINS IN THE JOINTS; SWELLINGS FROM FALLS. Take 60-250 grams of fresh pomelo skin and 30 grams of fresh ginger. Crush together and apply to the affected place. do this daily.

7. SKIN NO LONGER FLEXIBLE; DULL SKIN WITH RASH; SKIN ALLERGY; RASH AND PRURITUS WITH NO APPARENT CAUSE. Take 1 unripe pomelo, including the skin, cut up and simmer in water. Use the liquid to wash the affected parts 3 times a day. At the same time eat 60 grams of unripe pomelo 3 times a day.

8. HERNIA OF THE SMALL INTESTINE. Take 9-15 grams of the seeds, crush them, add water, steam and serve. Do this daily, both in the morning and in the evening.

PREPARATIONS
1. Cut the skin into 4 sections and divide in order to get to the edible part. Discard the seeds before eating.

2. DRIED SKIN. Collect the fruit skin and slice off the surface layer containing the oil pores. Dry this in the sun or in a dark dry place. It is then ready for use.

3. CANDIED POMELO SKIN. Trim off the outer layer of the skin, place in water and boil. Place in the sun and let the skin almost dry then take it and put it in boiling melted sugar. Remove from the heat, let it cool and it can be kept to use as needed.

WARNING
Pomelo flesh should not be eaten if suffering from deficiency of the spleen, deficiency of yang or diarrhoea. Pregnant women suffering from a deficiency of vital energy should not eat pomelo skin.
