PEARL

Pearls -- the result of an oyster, clam or mussel's self-protection against an invader -- are similar in composition to the lining of shell. As a powder, they are given by Chinese physicians for spasms, convulsions, headaches, and insomnia.

Pearls form as a result of an oyster, clam, or mussel's efforts to protect itself from foreign bodies, often parasites, that get inside the shell. The animal completely encloses the enemy in several layers of the same pearly substance that lines the shell. The pearls used medicinally are from sea rather than fresh water shells.
