Quartz
QUARTZ, SILICON DIOXIDE, SILICA
Silicon dioxide is used as a
non-active bulking agent in pharmaceutical tablets. Homeopaths use
Silicea made from flint for a range of conditions, from debility due to
over-exertion to migraine.
Quartz is the commonest mineral, making up 12 per cent of the earth's crust.
It takes many forms, from the colourless crystals of common quartz and stone-like flint to the beautiful amethyst,
rose quartz, onyx, tiger's eye, and jasper. Common quartz is the main source of silicon dioxide,
which is extensively used for such things as optics, electronic silicon chips, glassmaking, and precision instruments.
Synthetic rock crystals have been developed for some of these uses.
