Roseapple, pu taoRoseapple

Syzygium jambosa, PU TAO

 

The roseapple, pu tao (cat-tail peach) is also called shut pu tao (water cat-tail peach) and xiang guo (fragrant fruit). It is an evergeen tree growing to a height of 10 meters. It has white flowers composed of a ball of fine hairs. The fruit is round with a diameter of 30-50mm and the outer surface is smooth. The unripe fruit is green and changes to pale yellow when ripe.

Beneath the surface the skin is dark, 5mm thick and slightly spongy. The flesh has a fragrant perfume and sweet, slightly astringent flavor. Inside the fruit are 2-3 seeds, not attached to the skin, so that they make a sound when the fruit is shaken.

The fruit ripens at the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. Its nature is warm and it contains no poison. The fruit can cool the blood and is astringent. It contains carbohydrates, various vitamins, tannin, etc.

APPLICATIONS

1. HICCUPS THAT WILL NOT STOP. Take 30-60 grams of fresh fruit, discard the stones and eat. Wait for two hours and again eat the same amount if necessary.

2. COLD FEELING IN THE STOMACH; SWOLLEN STOMACH. Eat 30 grams of the fresh fruit in the morning and in the evening.

3. LUNGS WEAK; COUGH CAUSED BY 'WIND-EVIL'. Take 60 grams of fresh fruit and 15 grams of sugar. Add water, steam till cooked, discard the stones and mash, then eat.


4. STOMACH PAIN AND DIARRHOEA CAUSED BY ENTERITIS OR DYSENTERY. Take 60 grams of fresh fruit and crush, including the stones. Add water and steam till cooked then serve. Do this three times a day.

5. HAEMORROIDS, BLEEDING. Take 60 grams of fresh fruit flesh and 30 grams of fruit stones. Stir-fry the stones till they turn yellow. Add the flesh, cover with water and simmer. Drink this amount of liquid every day both in the morning and in the evening.

6. DIABETES. Take 30 grams of fruit stones, stir-fry till yellow then crush. Cover with water and simmer. Drink this in the morning and the same amount in the evening.

7. BLEEDING FROM WOUNDS. Take some fruit stone charcoal grind to dust and sprinkle on the wound.

8. SORES ON THE LOWER LIMBS. Take some fruit stone charcoal grind to a fine powder and blend to a paste with some rape oil. Apply this to the affected parts.

PREPARATIONS


FRUIT STONE CHARCOAL. Take dry fruit stones and stir-fry till the outside changes to charcoal, but the inside is still a yellow-brown color. This is fruit stone charcoal.
