The Russian or wild olive. Sha zao (sand date) is also called hong dou (red bean or love pea). It is a deciduous shrub or small tree growing to a height of 5-10 meters. The fruit is oval, with a diameter of 8-11 mm. The outer surface is covered with a layer of silver-white scales.


The fruit ripens in the autumn. The flavor of the flesh is sweet or acid-sweet. There is a single seed in each fruit. Its nature is neither warm nor cold.


The fruit can benefit the spleen and stomach, help stop diarrhoea and nocturnal emission, regulate menstrual functions, act as a sedative and promote strength. The fruit contains carbohydrate, protein, flavones, tannin, mucilage, etc.

APPLICATIONS
1. INDIGESTION; STOMACH SWOLLEN AND PAINFUL. Take 30 grams of fresh fruit and slowly chew it.

2. DIARRHOEA IN SMALL CHILDREN. Take 15 grams of dried fruit and stir-fry until the surface becomes golden. Add water and boil for some time. Serve the liquid as soup, 3 times a day.

3. SEMINAL EMISSION; EXCESSIVE MENSTRUATION LEADING TO DIZZINESS, SORENESS AND ABDOMINAL PAINS; LACK OF VIGOR. Take 30 grams of dried fruit and 30 grams of sliced hawthorn. Stir-fry till golden, add water and steam. Serve before going to sleep every evening.


4. SIGHT GROWING DIM; FEELINGS OF COLD AND PAIN IN THE LOWER PART OF THE BODY; INSOMNIA; LOSS OF MEMORY; MENOPAUSE STOMACH PAINS AND HEADACHE. Take 30 grams of dried fruit, 15 grams of the fruit of the Chinese wolfberry (lyceum chinense), I pig's brain and an appropriate amount of rice wine*. Steam and serve daily.

5. COUGH. WITH BURNING FEELING IN THE LUNGS. Take 60 grams of fresh fruit, wash clean and cat. Alternatively take 30 grams of dried fruit, simmer in water and serve. Do this both in the morning and in the evening.

6. CHRONIC ENTERITIS; STOMACH INFLAMMATION. Take one (Chinese) soup spoon of Russian olive tonic 3 times a day.

7. BOILS; FESTERING WOUNDS; ULCERS OF LOWER EXTREMITIES; CHILBLAINS. Take an appropriate amount of Russian olive tonic and spread on the affected place.

PREPARATIONS
RUSSIAN OLIVE TONIC. Take 1000 grams of part ripe fruit or 500 grams of dry fruit. Cover with water and boil for 2 hours, stirring from time to time. Strain through clean gauze to obtain the liquid. Simmer the liquid until it has reduced to a thick consistency.
