LIFE ROOT, GOLDEN GROUNDSEL,
SQUAW WEED
Life root is given by herbalists
for menopausal problems and absence of menstruation. The whole herb,
including the small, yellow, daisy-like flowers, is used.
Life root was used by North American Indians to treat vaginal discharges
but it has recently been found to have wider uses. A native of Canada and central United States,
it thrives in moist soil near water. It is a perennial with heart-shaped leaves at ground level,
deeply serrated, spear-shaped upper leaves, and small, yellow, daisy-like flowers
in early to midsummer.
PARTS USED
Whole herb.
ACTIVE INGREDIENTS
Pyrrolizidine alkaloids,
including florosenine, otosenine, floridanine, and senescine; sesquiterpenes.
ACTIONS
Increases urine production; stimulates the pregnant womb; expectorant; womb relaxant.
MEDICINAL USE
Given to ease menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes,
and nervous and emotional upset. It is also used for absent periods and leucorrhoea (excessive white vaginal discharge).
PREPARATIONS
Infusion, douche, tincture.
CAUTION
Large doses may harm the liver. Use only under the guidance of a qualified practitioner. Avoid in pregnancy.
