Smithsonite
NATIVE ZINC CARBONATE
This natural form of zinc
carbonate is a source for orthodox medicine's zinc supplements and zinc
oxide cream for skin problems. In Chinese medicine, powdered Smithsonite
is used for skin problems.
This mineral has been used since the middle ages to produce brass,
an alloy of copper and zinc. Zinc is an essential trace element; the existence of communities in Iran and Egypt who
have low levels has provided firm evidence of the results of deficiency, which include dwarfism,
lack of sexual development, poor hair growth, and rough skin. The way in which zinc works is not fully understood,
but it is a component of many enzymes in the body, and is crucial for an effective immune system.
PARTS USED
Zinc oxide or other zinc salts.
ACTIVE INGREDIENTS
Zinc.
ACTIONS
Nutrient; stimulates prostaglandin production; astringent;
involved in the formation of new flesh after an injury or operation and in the storage and release of insulin.
MEDICINAL USE
Zinc oxide is applied to the skin in orthodox medicine for rashes,
skin eruptions, insect bites, and eczema. Chinese medicine uses Smithsonite for the same purposes.
Zinc salts (generally zinc sulphate) are given internally as supplements to counteract deficiency and the zinc-lowering
effects of certain long-term drug treatments, such as those used to control epilepsy, and of some illnesses,
including cystic fibrosis and diabetes. Zinc gluconate is available in preparations for the relief of the common cold.
