Somniosus microcephalus
GREENLAND SHARK-HORNED DOGFISH, GREENLAND SHARK
Liver oil from this fish contains
unusual fatty acids, which trials have shown are valuable in reducing the
side-effects of cancer radiotherapy treatment. Chinese medicine uses it as a
general tonic.
Until the 19th century,
fishermen along the western coasts of Norway and Sweden valued liver oil from the true Greenland shark as a remedy for general debility,
irritations of the respiratory and digestive passages, and to speed wound healing.
Now, practical trials are confirming these traditional uses.
The oils that were identified as active in the shark are now taken from the dogfish S. microcephalus.
Prevalent in Arctic waters, it is also fished for food and sold as buss or dogfish in fishmongers.
