Helianthus annuus, KUI HUA ZI

Sunflower seeds, kui hua zi, are also called xiang ri kui zi (turn-towards-the-sun flower seeds) and kui gua (resembling melon seed). An annual plant with a sturdy upright stem growing to a height of 3-4 meters.

The seed (also called the fruit) is light grey or black, flat, long and egg-shaped or oval. Inside the seed is the kernel, this is pale yellow, contains abundant oil, has a fragrant perfume and slightly sweet flavor. They are harvested at the end of summer. Its nature is warm or neutral.

Sunflower seeds help treat a yin deficiency by reinforcing body fluid and nourishing the blood. They help stop dysentery and clear skin eruptions.
