Sunflower Seeds
Helianthus annuus, KUI HUA ZI
Sunflower seeds, kui hua zi, are
also called xiang ri kui zi (turn-towards-the-sun flower seeds) and kui gua
(resembling melon seed). An annual plant with a sturdy upright stem growing
to a height of 3-4 meters.
The seed (also called the fruit) is light grey or black, flat, long and
egg-shaped or oval. Inside the seed is the kernel, this is pale yellow,
contains abundant oil, has a fragrant perfume and slightly sweet flavor.
They are harvested at the end of summer. Its nature is warm or neutral.
Sunflower seeds help treat a yin deficiency by reinforcing body fluid and
nourishing the blood. They help stop dysentery and clear skin eruptions.
They contain abundant oil (70% of the oil is linoleic acid), carbohydrate,
protein, vitamin B1, B2, carotene, calcium, phosphorous, iron and various
organic acids, etc.
APPLICATIONS
(Note: In each case the shells are discarded and the kernels used,
unless otherwise stated.)
1. CONSTIPATION. Take 30 grams of kernels, crush and add 1 cup of boiled
water plus an appropriate amount of candied honey. Mix together and serve.
Do this daily, in the morning and in the evening.
2. DYSENTERY WITH BLOODY STOOL. Take 30 grams of kernels, crush and add 30
grams of sugar and an appropriate amount of water. Simmer for one hour and
serve. Do this three times a day.
3. MEASLES. Take 3-9 grams of kernels, crush them and add boiling water then
serve. Do this twice a day.
4. CARBUNCLES, SORE AND INFECTED. Take 30-60 grams of fresh sunflower
kernels, crush and spread on the affected place.
5. TINNITUS, BUZZING IN THE EARS. Take 15-30 grams of the shells and 30
grams of sugar, cover with water and simmer for half an hour then serve.
Take this both in the morning and the evening.
