Trifolium pratense (Leguminosae)
RED CLOVER, PURPLE CLOVER, TREFOIL
The flowers of red clover were
first used medicinally by North American Indians, even though the plant is
native to Europe. Herbally, it is used for skin diseases, including
psoriasis and eczema.
Although a native European plant,
it was not until clover was naturalized in North America and the native Indians had discovered its medicinal properties that it was recognized as a medicine in Europe.
It is reputed to be a valuable external remedy for the treatment of cancers, but this has not been proved.
A perennial with hairy stems and leaves of three spear-shaped leaflets, it produces red to purple flowers in the summer.
