Remedy for snoring

Question : I tend to snore when I sleep and it has been like this for years. This problem is disrupting me and my partner. What is the remedy?

Answer : Snoring is a common problem which occurs due to obstructed air movement during breathing while sleeping.

There are many factors that can limit irregular airflow through the nasal passage and cause snoring.

Incorrect sleeping posture may cause tongue, chin and the excess fat tissue beneath the chin to relax and thus constrict the airways, causing a person to snore.

Nasal blockage, which causes a person to breathe through an open mouth instead of through the nose, is another factor. Other causes are smoking, alcohol and being overweight.

I would suggest that you establish a regular sleeping pattern and change your sleeping position.

Sleep on your side instead of your back. Remember to avoid alcohol, which relaxes muscles in the airway, at least four hours before bedtime. Some herbal remedies might be helpful too.

If nasal blockage is the cause of snoring, you can supplement your diet with the herbs, horseradish and garlic.

Horseradish contains volatile oils that function as a nasal and bronchial dilator to clear stuffy noses or sinuses while the anti-microbial properties of garlic prevents and treats infections as well as enhances antibody production.

Otherwise, you can use a nasal strip that gently opens your nostrils and improve nasal breathing during sleep.
