Heavy periods and acne

Question : I'm in my early 30s. There are blood clots in my menses. Are these caused by poor blood circulation? I am suffering from acne too.

Answer : Women with heavy menstrual periods commonly complain of passing blood clots. All blood will clot, and it is not unusual for menstrual blood to clot within the uterus.

When bleeding is heavy or brisk, the clot within the uterus may come out before it has dissolved, and there may be less tissue fluid and endometrial components in the menstrual discharge. If you have a prolonged or heavy period, please seek the advice of a doctor.

The herb Chaste Tree or also known as Vitex castus can help to balance the progesterone and oestrogen levels, thereby alleviating irregular cycles and heavy or frequent periods. You may supplement your diet with evening primrose oil. Evening primrose oil is a rich source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA).

A regular intake of GLA has been demonstrated to ease problems relating to skin and women's menstrual cycle.

Incorporating antioxidants in your diet such as vitamins C and E, beta-carotene and the minerals selenium and zinc will prove beneficial in improving your skin condition. Beta-carotene, vitamin C and E are important components for skin repair. Vitamin C is needed to form collagen. Zinc helps to normalise oil production from sebaceous glands and prevents scarring.

A high intake of fruits, vegetables, soya, flaxseed oil, seaweed and whole grains are essential for a healthy skin. Regular exercise has shown to improve skin problems.
