Higher menstrual cycle

Question : I MENSTRUATE twice in a month. The first lasts for about five days and the second for three days. This has been happening the last six months. Is that normal ?

Answer : MENSTRUATION is part of a woman's monthly cycle in which blood and tissue are discharged from the vagina.

It can be light, moderate or heavy and the length of the period also varies.

A normal menstrual cycle is 21 to 35 days in duration, with menstrual bleeding lasting an average length of five days.

Some of the common menstrual problems or disorders faced by women are :

* Premenstrual syndrome ( PMS ) -- severe physical and psychological symptoms associated with the menstrual cycle

* Polymenorrhoea -- too frequent menstrual periods

* Amenorrhea -- the absence of menstrual periods

* Dysmenorrhea -- painful periods including severe cramps

You may be experiencing polymenorrhoea, with menstrual cycles of greater than usual frequency.

This condition usually indicates a cycle length of less than 28 days.

Hormonal imbalance, excessive exercise, illness, certain mediations and stress are some of the reasons for menstrual irregularities.

Polymenorrhoea may be caused by hormonal or ovulatory problems. Consult a doctor or gynaecologist. They will be able to help identify the cause and give you a clearer picture about your condition.

Many women take evening primrose oil and Vitex to relieve psychological symptoms, physical symptoms and problems related to menstrual cycles.

Vitex, a hormone balancing herb, helps to balance the progesterone and oestrogen levels, thereby regulating the menstrual cycle.

Reduce the intake of saturated fats and refined sugar as these foods may increase estrogen levels and cause excessive build-up of cells in the uterine lining.
