Evening primrose oil ( EPO ) is commonly used in the treatment of cyclical breast pain, which is one of the symptoms of pre-menstrual syndrome ( PMS ).

What is PMS ?

PMS, also known as premenstrual tension ( PMT ) is referring to a set of physical, psychological and emotional symptoms that appear 7 to 14 days before a menstrual period begins. The symptoms usually improve when the period starts. PMS can affect menstruating women of any age and it varies for each woman.

Exactly what causes PMS is unknown, but it is linked to hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle. For some women, PMS may be just a monthly bother. For others, the symptoms may be severe enough to affect their daily routines and activities.

The list of signs and symptom sis long, but most women with PMS experience only a few of these problems.

EPO is derived from the seeds of evening primrose plant ( Oenothera biennis ). It contains essential fatty acids namely linoleic acid ( LA ) and gamma-linolenic acid ( GLA ), which are important in the structures of membranes and in the synthesis of a wide variety of derivatives for the regulation of cellular activity.

A study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings found that EPO 3g daily in divided doses needs to be taken for at least 6 months for the treatment of cyclical mastalgia or breast pain.

Results from a study conducted by Brush et al provided a rationale for considering EPO supplementation for PMS. Based on the findings, researchers suggested that some women with PMS may not be able to adequately convert LA to GLA and this results in the increase in sensitivity to fluctuating hormones. As such, supplementation directly with GLA found in EPO would bypass the rpoblems and potentially normalize sensitivity and result in reduced symptoms.
