Dysmenorrhea

Dysmenorrhea is a commonly seen gynecological disorder marked by pain in the lower abdominal region before, during or after menstruation. it is classified into primary and secondary types. In primary dysmenorrhea lower abdominal pain commences with onset of the menarche with no abnormal genital conditions present. It is caused primarily by hypoplasia of the uterus, mental injury, or endocrine disorder. In secondary dysmenorrhea lower abdominal pain commences some time after the menarche. it is caused primarily by organic problems of the internal genitals. Manifestations of both primary and secondary dysmenorrhea include cramps in the lower abdominal region during menstruation, sometimes radiating to the vulva, anus, and back, and often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, pale complexion, and sweating and coldness of the hands and feet.

a) Body Acupuncture

Prescription : Sanyinjiao ( SP 6 ), Zhongji ( RN 3 ), Qihai ( RN 6 ), Guanyuan ( RN 4 ), Guilai ( ST 29 ), Zusanli ( ST 36 ).

Supplementary points : Add Xuehai ( SP 10 ) for coldness and pain at the lower abdomen and scanty menses with clots. taichong ( LR 3 ), Neiguan ( PC 6 ), and Yanglingquan ( GB 34 ) for distension and pain at the lower abdomen, Zhaohai ( KI 6 ), Shenshu ( BL 23 ), and Ququan ( LR 8 ) for dull pain int he abdomen, dizziness, tinnitus, and thin menses.

Method : Apply filiform needles with even movement. Retain the needles for 30 minutes manipulating them 3 ~ 4 times.

b) Ear Acupuncture

Prescription : Internal Genitals, Pelvis, Abdomen, Liver, Endocrine, Midpoint of Rim, Subcortex, Shenmen.

Method : Apply filiform needles with strong stimulation and retain the needles for 30 minutes. Auricular taping is also applicable.

c) Moxibustion

Prescription : Guanyuan ( RN 4 ), Qugu ( RN 2 ), Sanyinjiao ( SP 6 ).

Method : Apply ginger moxibustion to each point using 3 ~ 5 cones or moxibustion with a moxa stick to each point for 10 ~ 15 minutes at the period one or two days before the menstruation or on menstruation once or twice a day.

d) Wrist-Ankle Puncture

Prescription : Bilateral lower 1.

Method : Stretch the local skin with the thumb and index finger of the left hand. Insert a No. 30 needle 1.5 cun long held with the right hand into the skin at an angle of 30o to the skin. After piercing through the skin, place the needle horizontally and push it beneath the skin upwards for 1.4 cun. Then, it is retained for 30 minutes.

e) Electroacupuncture

Prescription : Guanyuan ( RN 4 ), Zhongji ( RN 3 ), Sanyinjiao ( SP 6 ), Qiahi ( RN 6 ), Shenshu ( BL 23 ).

Method : Select 2 points each treatment season. Apply dense-sparse wave or dense wave to each point for 10 ~ 20 minutes with medium strength stimulation once a day.

f) Point Injection

Prescription : Shenshu ( BL 23 ), Qihai ( RN 6 ), Guanyuan ( RN 4 ), Sanyinjiao ( SP 6 ), Xuehai ( SP 10 ).

Method : Inject 0.5 mL of Radix Angelizae Sinensis injection into each point once a day.

g) Laser Therapy

Prescription : Guanyuan ( RN 4 ), Zhongji ( RN 3 ), Zusanli ( ST 36 ), Taixi ( KI 3 ), Jiaoxin ( KI 8 ).

Method : Radiate each point with He-Ne laser beams for 5 minutes once a day.
