Multiple Pimeloma

Case 1

Li, male, age: 40

Case history

In 1963, the patient found three painful subcutaneous nodules as big as broad beans in the hip. It was diagnosed as the multiple pimeloma at Beijing Union Hospital. The patient consulted Dr. Shi Jinmo at the Union Hospital.

Treatment

The patient had a history of duodenal ulcer and pulmonary tuberculosis. Because of improper diet he became to suffer from a dull pain in the upper abdomen. The pulse was deep and thready and the tongue coating was thin and slimy. These symptoms were caused by deficiency in the lung and spleen, and obstruction of the meridians by phlegm leading to the formation of the tumor. Appropriate treatment involved focusing on reinforcing the function of the lung and spleen, resolving phlegm to dredge meridians, and regulating qi flow to dissipate masses.

Ingredients of the administered medicine were as follows:

red ginseng   30g

red tangerine peel   30g

milkwort root   30g

grassleaved sweetflag rhizome   30g

pumice   30g

thorowax root   30g

immature bitter orange   30g

turmeric tuber   30g

black-tailed snake   30g

bighead atractylodes rhizome   30g

ark shell   60g

seaweed   60g

sea tangle   60g

Chinese angelica root   60g

white peony root   60g

bile-prepared arisaema tuber   15g

burreed tuber   15g

zedoary   15g

eagle wood   15g

chlorite schist   15g

small gleditsia fruit   15g

medicated leaven   some

The above ingredients were ground into fine powder to be prepared into boluses, each weighing six grams. One bolus was taken each time, twice per day.

After one dose of the medicine was taken, the pimeloma disappeared completely. Then the other dose was taken to prevent relapse.

Remarks

Pimeloma, a kind of benign tumor which is made up of mature adipose cells, occurs in the subcutaneous tissues. It may be found in every part of the body, especially the subcutaneous tissues of the neck, shoulder, back and abdomen. Its incidence is higher in males than in females. According to theory of traditional Chinese medicine, pimeloma is triggered by emotional disturbance, overstrain, accumulation of phlegm, and stagnation of qi and blood. The symptoms of the patient in this case were caused by deficiency of speen-qi and lung-qi, and retention of phlegm. In the prescribed formula, red ginseng, bighead atractylodes and medicated leaven were administered to invigorate qi and strengthen the function of the spleen; red tangerine peel, pinellia tuber, white mustard seed, bileprepared arisaema and small gleditsia fruit resolved phlegm and dissipated lump; ark shell, pumice, chlorite schist, cuttlefish bone, seaweed and sea tangle softened and removed lump; thorowax root, immature bitter orange, turmeric tuber and eagle wood regulated qi; burreed tuber, and zedoary resolved phlegm; black-tailed snake dredged meridians and removed lumps; Chinese angelica root, white peony and red sage root nourished and regulated blood. This prescription, which was based on careful differentiation of syndrome, achieved an excellent result. Finally the patient was cured.
